July 27, 2009 – WoWGoldPig.com (the Pig) announces the winner of its hugely successful ‘Name the Twitter Pig’ contest.
Over an approximately 60-day period beginning May 1st of this year, thousands of World of Warcraft players logged onto wowgoldpig.com/blog/ to register for a chance to win 500,000 wow gold, which, at current conversion rates, has a "street value" of about $5,000 USD.
Contest entry rules required only that players register and submit a name for WoW Gold Pig's Twitter mascot. The Pig team is comprised of avid online game players who are also very active in social media networks. Based on their belief that there is significant overlap between online game players and those who are active in online communities in general, the team felt that a contest recognizing that overlap would be well received. Even so, they were surprised at the large and overwhelmingly positive response from the community.
Blogging was the only marketing effort used to drive awareness about the contest; some members focused on a "tweet campaign" while others blogged on various social networking and industry blog sites such as Facebook, MySpace and WowGoldFacts.com.
Readership at wowgoldpig.com/blog/ increased 100% during the contest period, and thousands of names were submitted. So many creative and entertaining names were received that the Pig decided to narrow the field to the 30 "best" entries (including such delightful names as Swinestein, Hamasaurus, Twiggie and Elvis Pigsley) and then turned again to the community to help choose the ultimate winner. The entire top 30 can be viewed at http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/1767273/.
After all the votes were counted, the Pig is pleased to announce the winning entry, Pigasus, which made it into the top 30 entrants on July 7th and went on to amass more than 1500 votes for first place during the final voting phase, to emerge the clear winner!
Pigasus was submitted by Chris, who resides in the United States. Chris will receive five hundred thousand World of Warcraft game gold, courtesy of WoWGoldPig.com. Chris adds, “You’ve made me and my wife very happy, knowing [that] we will be able to spare no expense on our [World of Warcraft] toons now.” The Pig will post an in-depth interview with Chris on the blog within the week, where you will be able to discover how he specifically intends to spend his contest winnings.
Pigasus is now the official name of the WoW Gold Pig Twitter mascot and will be used on Twitter, site graphics and other promotional materials.
According to WoW Gold Pig marketing executive and spokesperson Nick Gardner “We’re very happy with the promotion. Twitter, blogging and other social networks allow us to really connect with online gamers and enable us to both participate and contribute to the larger community.”
