Story Background and Normal Mode Tips for Halion the Twilight Destroyer

So you've just defeated the Lich King and claimed the twin titles of Kingslayer and The Light of the Dawn. You're sitting bored at the Dalaran bank steps after spending hours on end just fishing up coins at the fountain. You're even considering going on an extended break in World of Warcraft (sacrilege!) until the Cataclysm expansion rolls out.

There’s nothing left to do, you think, so what’s the point of sticking around?

Well, Patch 3.3.5 is just around the corner and it will literally light a fire under you with the new Ruby Sanctum raid. As the final pre-Cataclysm raid, Ruby Sanctum will kick off your expansion-wide clash against Deathwing through a fiery encounter against Halion the Twilight Destroyer.

Assault on the Ruby Sanctum
Under orders from Deathwing, Halion seeks to steal valuable red dragon eggs at the Ruby Sanctum and plans raise them as corrupted twilight dragons like himself. Your mission is to help Alexstrasza, queen of the red dragonflight, in repelling Halion from her brood’s sacred lair.

Halion has brought along three underlings with his war party so be prepared to fight through the black dragons Saviana Ragefire, Baltharus the Warborn and General Zarithrian before facing off Halion himself. You will have the choice to confront him as a 10- or 25-man raid, and either in normal or heroic modes. However, the guide below only covers the normal modes. alextrasza poster

Phase 1: Physical Realm
To survive the ground-razing attacks of Halion, you must master three boss phases. In the first phase, you must warn those afflicted with Fiery Combustion to move away from the raid or any path that other raid members will move into.

Fiery Combustion is a debuff that inflicts fire damage to a random raider and applies a stackable Mark of Combustion. Once this Mark of Combustion wears within 30 seconds or is dispelled, the raider will emit an explosion that burns the ground and causes a Combustion area effect.

The Combustion area effect has a 6-yard radius and deals ~2,000-3,000 fire damage per second to those who step on it. It even deals a knockback effect, which can prove lethal to raiders who get out of healer range. Random raiders afflicted with Fiery Combustion should have a designated area to “explode” to limit the battlefield spiked with Combustion.

On top of this already hectic phase, raiders would need to keep their eye out for large meteors summoned by Halion from the sky. A direct hit will eat up ~20,000 hp so do your best to avoid them as well as the flares shooting out from the meteor impact spot.

Phase 2: Twilight Realm

The second phase begins at approximately 75% life. Halion opens up a gate to the Twilight realm and all except the main tank and his healer should jump in.

In this Twilight realm, Halion will be vulnerable to attack while his physical form outside the gate will be invulnerable to damage. So the plan is for you to bring him down to 50% inside the Twilight realm through massive damage output.

Of course, Halion won’t stand around doing nothing. Instead of fire damage, he will be using dark magic damage. His most debilitating attacks include Dusk Shroud, a raid-wide aura that deals constant 3,000 shadow damage every two seconds to all players inside the Twilight realm.

He also does a shadow version of Fiery Combustion called Soul Consumption so players would still have to coordinate their movements in this phase to avoid the void Consumption zones that deal constant damage.

And in place of Meteor Strike, the twilight version of Halion will release two Shadow Pulsars that will emit a Twilight Cutter in between them. Avoid this beam at all costs since it will deal ~20,000 damage per second to the unfortunate raiders caught in its path.

Phase 3: Split Realms and Corporeality
At 50% life, Halion shifts to the final phase where he will open up two portals to the physical realm. Half of the raid should jump back to help the main tank and the healer left behind in phase two.

The trickiest part is to deal equal damage in both realms as Halion’s corporeality will rise or fall depending on the damage balance. If Halion takes more damage in the Twilight realm, his corporeality goes down and if it reaches 0%, he will dealing and receiving 400% extra damage but deal and take no damage in the other. The reverse happens when Halion takes more damage in the physical realm, and his corporeality rises to 100%.

So the key to phase three is to keep corporeality between 40% to 60% to ensure enough damage is getting through to Halion while still keeping damage manageable for healers. Partnered with coordinated raid positioning, you and your team mates can keep Ruby Sanctum safe from Halion and loot the dragon’s corpse for awesome ilvl 251 and 271 gear.
