Three Steps to Get the New Heirlooms of Cataclysm

With the level cap now raised to 85, the fastest way to level your Cataclysm toons is to collect as much heirlooms as you can.

The new expansion has introduced head and cloak heirlooms that grant its wearer a 15% experience boost from quests and kills. Combined with the 20% xp bonus from shoulder and chest heirlooms introduced in past expansions, your lowbie worgen or goblin should breeze through the leveling process.

Shoulder and chest heirlooms have been around for awhile so you've probably purchased them after grinding Justice Points in dungeons and raids. But the new Cataclysm heirlooms are a little harder to get so make sure to follow these three foolproof steps to get them fast:

STEP 1: Reach Guild Level 20
Cataclysm introduces the guild progression system where each member can contribute guild experience when doing different activities in the game like beating bosses and doing quests.

Your first goal should be to reach level 10 first, then 20. Guild level 10 unlocks the cloak heirloom while guild level 20 unlocks the head heirloom.

There are many ways to accumulate guild experience fast. You can form guild groups and start clearing dungeons and raids. You can also organize groups to try and win rated Battlegrounds matches. These group efforts will bring huge chunks of guild experience at a time.

If coordination is problem for your guild, you can go for quantity. Guild experience can also be earned from normal individual tasks like finishing quests, killing mobs and profession skill ups. You can recruit more members to have a slow but steady trickle of guild experience. Then it's only a matter of time before you reach guild level 20 and unlock both Cataclysm heirlooms.

STEP 2: Gain an Honored Reputation with your Guild
After reaching Guild Level 20, your guild will be able sell the head and cloak heirlooms. But you will need to earn an Honored reputation with your Guild before being able to purchase them.

Guild reputation works exactly like faction reputation for faction races like the Stormwind humans and Orgrimmar orcs. The more Guild experience you contribute to the guild, the more reputation you gain. You can go about this in a number of ways, depending if you have a max-level toon or not.

If you have a level 80-85 raiding toon, you can run normal and heroic versions of the new Cataclysm dungeons, from the underwater Throne of the Tides to the cult-infested Blackrock Caverns. You can also join raids that will pit you against the elemental allies and minions of expansion villain Deathwing.

But if you only have low-level toons, you can simply level up as normal. Completing quests will earn you guild reputation as well as running dungeons and winning in Battlegrounds matches. The general rule is if you gain experience for doing a certain task, your guild will gain experience as well, and bestow upon you corresponding guild reputation.

When you work at it, you should progress from Neutral guild reputation to Friendly to Honored. Two other levels are higher than Honored reputation-Revered and Exalted-but Honored is the bare minimum to unlock those head and cloak heirlooms.

STEP 3: Buy the Heirlooms with WoW Gold
So you've unlocked the heirlooms and earned enough Guild reputation to actually buy them. Now the question is: Do you have enough WoW Gold to afford them?

Each cloak heirloom costs 1,200 WoW Gold and there are three of them according to the stats they provide: Strength cloak for melee fighters like paladins and death knights; Intellect cloak for spell casters like mages and priests; and Agility cloak mainly for rogues and hunters. If you want all three, you'll need to shell out 3,600 WoW Gold.

Meanwhile, each head heirloom costs 1,500 WoW Gold and there are six of them: Cloth, Leather, Spell Leather, Mail, Spell Mail and Plate. Choose one that corresponds to the armor and class of your lowbie toon.

If you can't afford these heirlooms or don't have the time to farm the WoW Gold, it's perfectly reasonable to buy WoW Gold from reputable sources. Think of it as an investment because these heirlooms will send your characters to the end-game faster, where WoW Gold rewards are more generous. In short, they'll pay for themselves over time.
